GDC, Tuesday, Day Three

Go see all the GDC writer talks.

Don’t ask questions about what makes them good, they just are and you will be all the better for them. I seriously tried to break down each talk but I couldn’t. The content the speakers delivered, and the ideas that they presented are so amazing I will not do them justices.

After the talks, I returned to my hostel room to work on some homework, since I’m still completing my Master’s Degree and then passed out. I slept through all the parties and get togethers until about 11pm. I meet up with some friend’s at the Sky bar, over at the Marriott also known as the Death Star, and had another interesting experience nearly up there with the dollar incident.

While talking to a group of Dallas game devs in the crowed bar, a man placed his hand on my shoulder and said, “Excuse me.” What I felt next left me feeling a little violated.

Slowly,

Very slowly,

Almost in slow motion matrix style,

he rubbed his half erect cock against my butt.

Once his little woody cleared the curve of my right butt cheek, he disappeared into the crowd. I stood there stunned, disgusted, but I couldn’t do anything about it. My friends weren’t quite sure why my eyes went wide, until I told them.

It hit me after awhile how powerless I felt, even though it wasn’t a big sexual harassing moment and it wasn’t like I was shoved over the table by it or being held down by his hand, but for a moment my personal space was completely destroyed. I resolved to these things happen and thought maybe he didn’t mean it. I don’t really want to make a big deal out of it, with media coverage and all that. Lord knows there is a lot of different things that could have made that moment worst, so I got off lucky.

Yet it reminded me of a story from last year about another female game developer having to confront a similar situation. I’ve heard a lot of women have had this issue, and I’ve only come up against it now. Sure, I’ve had guys standing a little to close. The unwanted pick up. The leering guy from across the room. But I have never had something like that happen to me before. It’s a little nerve-racking, but I still got three more days to go and can’t hide in my room because some guy made me uncomfortable. So here’s to you, GDC, for creating fun and uncomfortable moments at the same time.

  1. My Goodness! Sorry you had to go through that. Some people are just animals that never learned to control their basic instincs. I hope you reported him to the club or hotel you were at; because if he did it to you he probably has done it and will continue to do it to other unsuspecting women. You should have stumped on his foot the minute you realiized what he was doing, The Jerk.People like that should be in a taxidermy shop stuffed with nails and shards of glass.

A penny for your thoughts?
